How to detect iPad Portrait vs. SplitView with CSS3?

I realize this is more of a CSS3 question than Titanium, but I cannot for the life of me figure it out and just wasted 2+ hours on this. I have an iPad app with a splitview that has a webview in the detailview. When the iPad is in portrait orientation, the webview in the detailview displays full screen (768px wide). When the iPad is in landscape orientation, the webview displays in the detailview at what looks like 703px because the masterview is also on the screen.

Using a CSS3 media query, how do I determine if the webview within the splitview is being displayed in portrait (768px) or landscape (703px) orientation? I cannot get the landscape orientation detected. Even with (orientation:landscape) or (max-width:703px) it still thinks it's portrait.

Someone must have already figured this out. Please help!
